Consultancy

As a consultant and freelance researcher I support clients in the higher education, research, and international development sectors. My consultancy areas align with the expertise developed during my academic career at the University of Edinburgh (2008–17):

  • higher education policy, especially the value and impact of research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences;

  • food and nutrition—social and cultural aspects, as well as policy.

I also take on occasional projects in public health. As a consultant I can support you with existing projects, deliver a stand-alone project, or collaborate with you on a new proposal or bid.

Experience and skills

I help clients across research and policy contexts, thanks to wide-ranging experience and a flexible skill set. As a qualitative researcher, I have designed and delivered diverse projects, with particular experience as a research interviewer, both face to face and online. In the policy context, I support clients with desk-based research, evidence collation, and policy analysis, among other tasks.

I bring high-level, versatile writing and editing skills to all my consultancy work, and my favourite jobs involve gathering and shaping evidence for a particular audience—summarising, synthesising, and rewriting. Often, I’m crafting stories about research impact. For clients in international development, I provide technical research and drafting across food, nutrition, and health.

Since 2020 I’ve delivered a number of projects for the British Academy, many of them toward the SHAPE campaign and SHAPE Observatory. I provided consultancy support for the joint British Academy–Academy of Medical Sciences Historic and Geographic Patterns of Health Inequalities project, convened at the request of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).

Practicalities

I’m currently open to new clients in the UK or abroad—please contact me for a no-obligation discussion. I work mainly remotely, from my home in rural Derbyshire. Subject to availability I’m happy to help at short notice, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch at any stage.
