Editing services

As a freelance editor I specialise in academic manuscripts and research-based reports. (For poetry editing, see my Writing page.) I offer the full range of editing services, from proofreading to structural and developmental editing, specialising in copyediting and line editing. I support researchers across the arts, humanities, and social sciences, with particular editorial experience in history and archaeology. I also take on interdisciplinary work at the interface with STEM, such as qualitative research in medicine and health care, reflecting my own research background.

As well as academic research publications—journal articles, book chapters, edited collections, and monographs—I’m happy to help with grant applications, research proposals, conference papers, teaching resources, and shorter documents as required. I’ve worked on everything from lengthy book manuscripts to half-page conference abstracts; no editing job is too big or too small.

Many of my academic clients are writing in English as an additional language (or working with multilingual contributing authors), but there are many other reasons for seeking editorial support. You might lack time to edit or proofread your own work, or you might want to maximise your chances on an important application or bid. You might be relying on voice-recognition software, struggling to meet a tight word limit, or feeling stuck and in need of developmental advice. You might simply feel more confident in your research and ideas than in your writing style. I’ve helped clients in all these scenarios and more.

Beyond academia, I support public bodies and other organisations publishing research-based evidence for policymakers—see below for more details.

Experience

I’ve worked as a freelance editor since 2019, supporting researchers all over the world—from the University of British Columbia to Koç University, Istanbul, and from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology to William Angliss Institute, Melbourne! Research that I’ve edited or proofread has been published by (or is forthcoming with) leading academic publishers such as Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, and the MIT Press, as well as in a wide range of journals. I’ve also edited reports for publication by the British Academy and the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland. I joined the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading in 2023.

My academic career is the backbone of my practice as an editor. I bring wide-ranging theoretical, methodological, and subject expertise; almost two decades’ experience of the academic publishing process; and personal familiarity with institutional and policy contexts for research. Whether you’re a PhD student publishing your first journal article, an early career researcher converting your dissertation to book, an established academic coordinating volume contributors or submitting a high-stakes funding bid under time pressure—I’ve been there, and I can help. If your organisation publishes research findings to inform policy, I bring a career-long specialism in research communication and knowledge exchange, with freelance experience on high-profile reports to tight deadlines.

As a writer and a researcher I am passionate about the value of the arts, humanities, and social sciences; as an editor I can help you convey your ideas clearly, precisely, and elegantly to the widest possible audience.
